Separated at Birth: Rex Grossman and Jello Biafra. Saints, coach an ex-new waver too?

Separated at Birth: Rex Grossman and Jello Biafra

Sitting at home in Portland watching the Bears in the playoffs. I imagine several shitty guys are doing the same thing in Chicago right now. These pics aren’t the best examples, but in Grossman’s tiny profile pic in the bottom left corner of the TV, and lately, straight on with his helmet, he looks like Jello Biafra.

The Saints coach Sean Payton is from Naperville! He was a senior there in my sophmore year at Naperville Central. I wonder if he was one of the guys on the football team (there were a couple around 82 ) who had a new wave-ish band. It was odd, they played a block party in my nieghborhood, Rock Lobster was on the set list. We just stumbled on it and were confused by burly guys on the football team playing Rock Lobster in a cul de sac in my neighborhood. I swear to god, a couple of them were actually wearing their school jerseys. Weird.

Portland vs Chicago drivers

When it snows here people whig out and lose their shit. Nobody drives worth a damn. I didn’t make it to this street, but I drove around all day on the same day this was shot. It’s fun being a transplanted midwesterner in Oregon. Thanks to Scary for finding this. Here’s what I did on my snow day.

Naked Raygun @ HOB in April

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

Geriatric “punk rockers”, Naked Raygun, have announced an upcoming concert at Chicago’s House of Blues (HOB for super cool hipsters like myself) on April 27th.

Also on the bill are The Effigies, Bollwevils and some other band or two I have never heard of.

Tickets are on sale now. $21.50 per person.

I thought some of you should know.

Perhaps Randy will fly in to touch himself inappropriately at the show.

I’m sure I will see you in the mosh pit doing my new dance where I shake a lot in honor of NR.

When you post something, don’t forget to select one or more category (it’ll be on the right side). Otherwise they all default to “Miscellaneous.” Because I am anal retentive, I have gone back and done this for some posts.

TK In South Beach. Everyone Else Freezing Their Ass Off

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

Ocean Drive on Miami BeachTight Teen Tang

In Miami Beach, it’s been sunny, warm and in the ’80’s. If you don’t know, the highest concentration of truly hot young women exist in South Beach. Most of the time, they wear revealing clothing. Many young women like to sunbathe topless on the beach. There are also great restaurants there.

TK is there with his lovely wife Kayoko.

Fuck you Tom.

Eddie’s, Chin’s, Chin’s Wok & Roll Cafe RIP

Clybourne (chins)

If you were to enter (and I advise strongly against it) the cavernous, campustown drinkery that is the Clybourne you may get the vague sense it once was the building which housed Eddie’s, Chins, et al.

But that is about it.

The Christmas Fish and blowfish lights and photographs of George Chin Sr. holding up his prized, orange “Money Talk, Bullshit Walk” T-shirt have all long since been removed. From what I saw at his visitation it would appear much of it filled out the space not taken up by George’s 87-pound frame in the casket.

Firehaus (R&R)

Across the alley where the R&R (?) once stood is a bar, the Firehaus, in which you may purchase beer which is to be dispensed from a fire-hydrant. Although, to be fair, the garage doors can be opened in fair weather which make for a pretty neat atmosphere (I actually have only been there once).

Mabel’s is now Brothers. Kam’s is still very much Kams.

(so is Mabel’s a gay bar now? And have you seen Galva at Chester Street?)

George Chin Still Dead After Nearly A Month

Monday, January 8th, 2007

This is all I could find online.

http://www.legacy.com/news-gazette/Obituaries.asp?Page=Notice&PersonID=20294442

What a weak obituary. C’mon you would think that there would be more and better stories than that around. Geez!

Maybe some of you guys can share a few stories about George Chin, Eddie’s and Chin’s.

As a non-drinker, the only reason I was there was to try (operative word is “try”) to convince inebriated young ladies to bring me into their boudoir.

I didn’t spend a lot of really late nights there hanging out with all the local characters like a guy like Scary may have. I’m sure he has a lot of stories. Please share.

Why is this type so large?

Rasta James Dead at 56

Monday, January 1st, 2007

An end of an era.

He died of a heart attack in his sleep. More details in the links below. Actually, his obit gives a lot of info that I never knew. Like he was one of, if not only black kids at Urbana HS when he attended. He also played basketball, football and ran track. I guess his dad was a U of I track coach. Ra even held a high jump record at Urbana HS for a long time. He was class president as well. Can you imagine being the black class president at a basically, all white school? Even in Urbana, as liberal a town that it is, it must have been an accomplishment. Think of the shit that guy got back then in the late ’60’s.

I guess WEFT is planning a special memorial radio show.

I heard about his death on a radio newscast. I wasn’t sure if it was on News Radio 780 or or WLS or WGN radio. But, I heard it the other night coming home from work. Who would of thought that guy would have been famous enough to rate all this press. He even made the AP wire.
