DATELINE: Champaign-Urbana
After 81 years, the University of Illinois has killed off The Chief. Succumbing to the wishes of a few hippie, poltically correct whiners, the NCAA and a few overly sensitive injuns, U of I Chairman Lawrence Eppley made the announcement on Friday, February 16th. Eppley announced The Chief would dance his last dance at Illinois last home basketball game for the season a week ago. Many alumni and students were sad and pissed.
Now, I have never really had any love for The Chief. I always thought he was kind of dorky. I always thought we should have some big headed dude made out of plastic to run around and hug cheerleaders. However, I get upset when crybaby leftwing types throw their tantrums and get their way. As gay as The Chief was, it was never disrespectful of Native Americans. Inaccurate? Probably. But not disrespectful. Plus people liked him.
